Accelerating system for hollow ion beams

Description

The design is described for a radio-frequency system for the acceleration and focusing of hollow ion beams. The presented experimental and calculated characteristics of a prototype system for the acceleration of double charged boron ions 11B+2 permit the conclusion that focusing and acceleration of hollow ion beams are possible in principle. The use of an operating wavelength in the range 5-7 m with a cavity of small transverse size and a circular drift channel make this a promising system for the acceleration of high-current ion beams in the post injection part of a linear accelerator
