High level waste disposal and reprocessing in the UK
Description
This paper outlines the current policy position in the United Kingdom on the disposal of radioactive waste. In the United Kingdom (UK) this is primarily Vitrified High Level Waste (VHLW) from the vitrification of primary separation aqueous raffinate, rather than spent fuel for direct disposal. The paper outlines the reasons behind why reprocessing and VHLW have been selected and how this shapes HLW disposal policy in the UK. The paper also outlines the complex arrangement of Institutional Systems actually or potentially concerned with HLW disposal e.g. the links between government agencies, advisory bodies and the nuclear industry
