Description

For a magnetically confined hot plasma major erosion is expected at the vessel walls around areas where the separatrix, i.e. the least closed magnetic surface intersects. In a divertor tokamak these are the divertor tiles receiving the highest power and particle fluxes. Recent investigations have shown that besides sputtering arcing at inner tokamak surfaces can be a frequent event leading to a remarkable surface erosion. The present paper reports about detailed analysis of divertor tiles from the ASDEX-Upgrade tokamak exploring the contributions to surface erosion of sputtering and of arcing phenomena during a defined number of discharges.
