Description
Solid state relationships in the system Ce-Ru-C have been examined by annealing arc-cast specimens in the temperature range 600-12500C and using X-ray analysis, electron probe microanalysis and reflected light microscopy to determine the compatible phases. The existence of the perovskite-type compound CeRu3C has been confirmed and it has been shown to form in a peritectic manner. A new ternary compound Ce3Ru2C5 that has hexagonal symmetry and also forms peritectically is reported. The criteria that have been used to predict the formation of perovskite carbides are reviewed in the context of the work reported here. (orig.)
