Development of multitracer methodology for the characterization of petroleum reservoirs

  • 1. Center of Development of Nuclear Technology, Belo Horizonte-M.G. (Brazil)

Description

Amongst other candidate tracers, the use of potassium thiocyanide labelled with 35S (K35SCN) has been investigated. This species is highly water soluble, temperature resistant, and is not adsorbed in the extended solid surfaces of the formation pores. Being a beta emitter, it minimizes radiological protection problems but requires sampling for activity measurement in the laboratory. The paper describes the extraction of the elemental radiosulfur from KCl lattice and the development of an optimized route to synthesize the thiocyanide that avoids lengthy and numerous intermediate reactions and separations. Laboratory and ongoing field tests designed to validate the tracer are also described. (author)
