Summary of the second stage detailed design of the multi-purpose experimental very high temperature gas-cooled reactor for JAERI

Description

The detailed design-2 is to make the design of an experimental reactor plant which can demonstrate the required function and ensure the safety in detail, based on the results achieved so far, and it aimed at the drawing-up of the safety examination data, the decision of the construction specification and the reckoning of the construction cost. The design was carried out from March, 1982, to March, 1984, and the contents of the design works were divided into the design related to the revision of the design basic conditions, the synthetic design of the plant, and the acquisition of the design data. The basic conditions examined were the thermal output of the reactor, the temperature at the entrance and exit of the reactor, the type of fuel assemblies, the materials of the reactor containment vessel and piping and the cooling system. This plant is that of graphite-moderated, helium-cooled type using coated particle fuel and thermal neutrons. Data were collected for the sealing performance to improve flow rate in the core, high temperature structures, the creep rupture of Hastelloy XR, the external pressure buckling of heating tubes and so on.
