Experimental study of possible therapy of the acute radiation syndrome

These experimental studies showed that the survival time of rats, irradiated in a whole-body irradiation with 3000 rad 60Co-gamma, can be positively influenced by the administration of an antibiotic and also by glucocorticoids. Contrary to our expectations, the combined application of the glucocorticoid and the antibiotic did not increase the survival time of the animals with gastrointestinal syndromes compared with the exclusive administration of the antibiotic. The mineral corticoid aldosterone resulted to be ineffective. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Die Untersuchungen zeigten, dass sowohl durch Gabe eines Antibiotikums als auch durch Glukokortikoide die Ueberlebenszeit der mit 3000 rad 60Co-Gamma - ganzkoerperbestrahlten Ratten guenstig beeinflusst werden kann. Wider Erwarten konnte durch die kombinierte Anwendung des Glukokortikoids mit dem Antibiotikum keine groessere Lebensverlaengerung der Tiere im gastrointestinalen Syndrom erreicht werden als durch die alleinige Gabe des Antibiotikums. Das Mineralokortikoid Aldosteron erwies sich als wirkungslos. (orig.)
