Composition dependence of absorption and emission properties of Nd3+ in silicate glasses

Description

Composition dependence of absorption and emission properties of Nd3+ in silicate glasses using the Judd-Ofelt model for crystal-field-induced electric dipole transitions was investigated. Dependence of the following properties on the content of network former and the types of network modifier (alkali and alkali earth oxides) were shown: absorption intensity, radiative transition probability, fluorescence life-time, radiative quantum efficiency, and induced-emission cross section etc. It is noted that changes in the induced-emission cross section resulting from composition changes are correlated with changes in the transition probability, and that excited-state depumping through absorption transition from the 4F sub(3/2) level is a small effect in silicate glasses. Three phenomenological intensity parameters are estimated within 4 rms-% deviation. (auth.)
