Description
Nuclear utilities worldwide have been upgrading their emergency core cooling system sump strainers to met new regulatory requirements for handling larger quantities of debris that might be generated during a loss of coolant accident. This paper presents briefly the background for the replacement of the existing strainers with a much larger filtering surface. Then it describes the modular design, the testing performed for its qualification, the manufacturing, the on-site installation and the commissioning of the strainers. Topics discussed include reduced-scale and large-scale testing, hydraulic and stress analyses, mechanical design, and descriptions of various installed designs. 30 retrofit strainer installations are currently underway in EDF's 900 MWe and 1300 MWe PWRs
