The segmented calorimeter: a study of hadron shower structure

Description
The construction, operating characteristics and use of a large segmented liquid argon/iron ionization calorimeter is described. With this instrument the authors have carried out qualitative studies of the development of hadronic showers at high energies. Results on both the longitudinal and transverse development of showers are given. The energy of an incident hadron can be determined with a resolution of: sigma sub(E)/E = (8.5 + 28/√Esub(H))%, and its dierction with a resolution of: sigmasub(theta) = (16 + 433/Esub(H)) mrad.
