Description
Piping systems are usually designed by analysis following ASME rules and criteria. Some of the loads are dynamic in nature and the response of the system must meet Code allowables. This response is a function of the losses that occur during oscillation. The parameter that quantifies losses depends on: stress levels, support effects, nonlinearities, general geometry, frequency, mode of vibration, etc. The authors are presenting an evaluation of the methodology and experience acquired to provide to the ASME Code, reliable, and conservative approaches to establish damping losses for seismic analysis. The possible dependence of damping on certain parameters are issues that the Code will need to address before final damping values are adopted. (orig.)
