Simulation of ion acceleration in a stationary cyclotron wave of a high-current electron beam

Description

A simple numerical model, describing, stationary cyclotron wave (SCW) in a high-current electron beam, which is excited by local inhomogeneity of guiding magnetic fields and which is propagating along the axis of flat metal waveguide, has been considered. Expression for the regularity of electron energy adiabatic change in time, ensuring the optimum ion acceleration by the wave is obtained. The motion of sample ions is simulated numerically and the acceleration peculiarities are clarified. The calculations made have shown that using local inhomogeneity of the guiding magnetic field it is possible to excite strong enough SCW and to accelerate ions from zero to medium energies of approximately 20-30 MeV at electron beam curent of approximately 10-15 kA and at the length of the accelerating structure approximately 200-300 cm
