Polarization of X-rays from Cygnus X-1: A test of the accretion disk model

  • 1. Center for Radiophysics and Space Research, Cornell University

Description

Measurements of the polarization of X-rays from Cyg X-1 can yield significant information about the structure of the accretion disk which produces the observed spectrum. In particular, both the physical geometry (sensitive to large changes in the viscosity) and also the soft X-ray cutoff of the inner region of the disk have distinguishable effects on the observed polarization
