The regulatory view on LLW (and PCM) waste minimization across the nuclear industry
- 1. Health and Safety Executive, Bootle (United Kingdom). Nuclear Installations Inspectorate
- 2. Health and Safety Executive, London (United Kingdom). Nuclear Installations Inspectorate
Description
The Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) regulates the management of radioactive waste on Nuclear Licensed Sites. The Inspectorate has wide powers under the Health and Safety and Nuclear Installations acts in respect of the management of radioactive waste. Accumulated waste can present a potential hazard to workers and the public. The paper describes some possible methods to prevent waste accumulation. NII has placed them in order of preference avoidance, minimization, recycling and disposal. The paper also describes the liaison with the agencies which authorize disposals. (author)
