Comparison of temperature dependence of the fluorescence of Sm2+-ion doped in different hosts

  • 1. Nagoya Institute of Technology, Showa, Nagowa (Japan)

Description

This paper presents new results about Sm2+ fluorescence in two host materials - in a BaFCl0.5Br0.5 single-crystal and in an Al2O3-SiO2 glass. The fluorescence emission channels were comparatively studied through measuring the temperature dependencies of the fluorescence intensities and lifetimes and these dependencies were found to be markedly different in the two materials. In the glass the fluorescence emission channel of 5D0-7F0 of Sm2+ is 4f5d-5D0-7F0, while in the single-crystal that is 4f5d-5D1-5D0-7F0. The electron transition probability of 5D0-7F0 in the glass was found to be larger than that in the single-crystal, which is attributed to the 4f5d bands being closer to the 5D0 level so that the wavefunctions of the 4f5d bands and the 5D0 level mixing further.
