Nuclear Posture Review 2018. Nuclear deterrence in dormition?

Due to their lifetime and to the evolution of the geo-strategic context, the components of the US nuclear force (warheads deployed among a complete nuclear triad with ground-ground, air-ground, sea-ground, strategic and tactic, aerobic and gravitational vectors) must be modernised. In this respect, a new Nuclear Posture Review has just been adopted which include the perception of the new international environment by the Trump administration. The author outlines that such a modernisation will require a substantial financing effort, and that the development of new low power capacities could result in a fading of a deterrence-based strategy for the benefit of a use-based strategy. The author thus discusses the American perception of the international security environment, the role of US nuclear weapons, the issue of renewal and modernisation of US nuclear capacities, the stake of the financing of capacity renewal, the issue of consistency of deterrence regimes, and the way non-strategic nuclear is addressed in the Review
