Development of nuclear microfilters using the IEA R1 reactor

  • 1. Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares (IPEN), Sao Paulo, SP (Brazil)

Description

Nuclear microfilters with porosity around 107 and 108 pores/cm2 and mean hole diameters in the range from 0,1 to 1,0μm have been produced using the fission track registration technique in Makrofol KG foils (10μm thickness). These polycarbonate films were irradiated by a collimated beam of fragments produced in U-235 fission with thermal neutrons of the IEA-R1 reactor. The best chemical etching condition were obtained, with sodium hydroxide solutions of 6,25 N at 450 C and 5,0 N at 350 C for pore densities of approximately 107 and 108 pores/cm2 respectively.
