The effect of decontamination on the corrosion rate of stainless steels

Description

Experiments on samples of the CSN 17248.4 and CSN 17247.4 steels in a medium imitating the WWER type reactor coolant were carried out on a high-pressure stand. The decontaminants included EDTA, KMnO4, KOH, NaOH and oxalic, citric and sulfosalicylic acids, occasionally combined with electrolysis. The sample weight loss was measured in the various decontamination procedures. After the decontamination, the corrosion rate was found lower than in the starting material. Changes in the relative abundances of elements were detected in the corrosion layer formed on the decontamination: this layer was richer in Cr on the expense of Fe. The compounds formed are more resistant to corrosion. (M.D.). 1 fig., 2 tabs
