Progress in the field of radiotherapy
Description
The limited possibilities of 'conventional' high voltage therapy are described as well as the reasons for tests with heavy particle therapy. Then the different possibilities and first results in several tumor types are reported. In some tumors significantly better outcome could be reached. After description of the results of traditional radium therapy in the last decades the reasons for the switch to afterloading are stated. The different possibilities of high-dose-rate (HDR), medium-dose-rate (MDR) and low-dose-rate (LDR) and the different isotopes used for them are mentioned. The advantages of each method, the dose distribution and the therapeutic results follow. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die begrenzten Moeglichkeiten der 'konventionellen' Hochvolt-Strahlentherapie werden dargestellt und die Gruende fuer Versuche mit Strahlentherapie durch schwere Teilchen erlaeutert. Sodann werden die verschiedenen Moeglichkeiten beschrieben und die ersten Ergebnisse bei verschiedenen Tumorarten dargestellt. Bei einer Reihe von Indikationen konnten signifikant bessere Ergebnisse erzielt werden. Nach Darstellung der Ergebnisse der jahrzehntelangen Erfahrungen mit der Radiumtherapie gynaekologischer Tumoren werden die Gruende fuer den Uebergang auf die Afterloading-Methode erlaeutert. Die verschiedenen Moeglichkeiten der High-Dose-Rate (HDR), Medium-Dose-Rate (MDR) und Low-Dose-Rate (LDR) und die dazu verwendeten radioaktiven Isotope werden dargestellt. Die Vor- und Nachteile der jeweiligen Methoden werden beschrieben, die Dosisverteilung und die therapeutischen Ergebnisse erlaeutert. (orig.)Additional details
