Description
This paper presents a reliability approach for optimal design of structural components. The approach eliminates the uncertainty in the design when employing the safety factor concept. We consider the failure distribution, replacement costs and cost of component manufacturing to determine the optimal principal dimension and the optimal replacement cycle (if exists) which minimize the total cost per cycle.
