Afterpulses in a proportional counter with cathodes from different materials

Description

The results of studies on the afterpulses originating in a proportional counter due to the effect on the cathode are presented. It is shown that by change of gas amplification the afterpulse amplitude changes in proportion to the amplitude square of the basic pulse whereby the proportionality coefficient may serve the criteria for comparing emission properties of various cathodes materials. The comparison of the emission properties of the cathodes from stainless steels, copper, beryllium and aluminium alloys is carried out. It is established that the aluminium surface phosphating essentially reduces the photoeffect on the cathode whereby, the phosphate coating is characterized by sufficient conductivity, which prevents spontaneous discharges in the counter
