Amino acid precursors from possible interstellar media by heavy ion bombardment

Description
A wide variety of organic compounds have been found in space. It is suggested that organic compounds can be formed in molecular clouds by cosmic rays. We examined possible formation of amino acid precursors from possible interstellar media by heavy ion bombardment. Mixtures of methanol, ammonia and water were irradiated with carbon beams (290 MeV/u) or helium beams (150 MeV/u). A wide variety of amino acids were detected in the products after acid hydrolysis. G-values of amino acids by C- or He-beams were higher than those by gamma-rays. Stability of amino acids against heavy ion irradiation was also examined. (authors)
