The gastrointestinal absorption of plutonium-239 and americium-241 in the hamster
Description
Various chemical forms of plutonium-239 and americium-241 were administered by gavage directly into the stomachs of hamsters to study their behaviour following ingestion. The results show that the proportion absorbed can vary about a factor of 1600. Plutonium as dioxide particles was absorbed the least (0.00003%) while the citrate was the most transportable form (0.01%). In general americium was absorbed more readily than plutonium, 35 times greater for the nitrate and 173 times greater for the oxide. (U.K.)
