A design study on the remodeling of KUR-D2O thermal neutron facility for the optimization from reactor physics and engineerings

Description
A design study for the remodeling of the D2O thermal neutron facility of the Kyoto University Reactor (KUR) was performed mainly from the viewpoint of reactor physics and engineerings. To improve the quality of neutron irradiation field and to make the facility for wider application, design survey calculations were carried out using the transport codes of ANISN-JR, DOT3.5 and the code systems of RADHEAT-V3, SRAC. The data libraries of ENDF/B-4, JENDL-3 and POPOP-4 were used for these calculations. From these investigation, the characteristics of neutron irradiation facility to be remodeled have been clarified for following subjects. (1) epi-thermal neutron generator, (2) energy spectrum shifter for epi-thermal and pure thermal neutrons, (3) shielding shutter system, (4) contamination of gamma-ray and fast neutron doses, (5) depth dose distribution in a living body for biomedical uses.
