Relation of the positive phase of ionospheric storm to circulation and composition of the polar thermosphere

  • 1. Gidrometeorologicheskaya Sluzhba, Moscow (USSR)

Description

The data on the thermospheric neutral composition ((O)/(N2) ratio), taken by the Dynamics Explorer-2 satellite during December 14-27, 1981 to find out the characteristic features of (O)/(N2) variation at high latitudes in quiet and feebly perturbed days are analyzed. It is shown that there are typical peaks in the (O)/(N2) distribution for each latitudinal circle in separate longitudinal range, which cannot be explained by the only consideration of the solar short-wave radiation effect and circulation induced by solar heating
