Exploring new concepts in indirect drive inertial confinement fusion

Description
Whilst the majority of work in Indirect Drive ICF in the past decade has concentrated upon NIF-like targets, the on-going difficulties in achieving ignition at the NIF have in recent years provoked a resurgence in more rudimentary concept exploration in Indirect drive. Here we describe some recent efforts by our group to look at new parameter space in indirect drive target design, considering particularly the generation of fast rising radiation drives and the use of intermediate-Zhohlraum liners to inhibit M-band generation. Limitations in producing fast rising radiation drives by conventional methods are discussed, and several advanced concepts are explored. whilst the work described is simulation based, using the radiation hydrodynamics codes Hyades and h2d, we have experiments scheduled to further explore some of these issues, and these will also be outlined
