Production and control of activation products at an electron linear accelerator complex

Description
Activation product source terms in ground water, soil and are are estimated for a major high-energy research complex that will comprise a 1.0 GeV electron linear accelerator feeding a storage ring and a 150 MeV superconducting electron linear accelerator. An empirical calculational approach, based on theoretical models that have been widely published, was used. This facility presented unique activation product control requirements because of the location of the accelerator complex within an urban campus environment, strict ALARA environmental dose guidelines, the close proximity of experimental personnel to the accelerator caves and the phased construction schedule. Also, estimates are made of activation product build-up in beam dump primary cooling loops
