Uniform elongation of stainless steels

An investigation of the effect of the chemical composition, structure, testing temperature, heat treatment conditions upon the value of the uniform elongation of martensite, austenite and transition class stainless steels has shown, that their uniform elongation depends mainly on the rate of drop of relative strengthening as the degree of deformation increases. It is established that the rise and the drop in temperature of deformation of martensite and austenite steels, which suffer no phase transformation in the course of deformation, leads respectively to a decrease and an increase of the uniform elongation. A practically complete elimination of carbon and nitrogen sharply lessens the uniform elongation of martensite steels, having no effect upon the uniform elongation of austenite steels
