Description

High-resolution 478-679-nm spectroscopic observations of the Herbig-Haro objects HH1 and HH2, obtained using a two-stage magnetically focused image intensifier, a 2.2-arcsec-wide 117-arcsec-long slit, and a 90-cm-focal-length f/3 camera with the vertical coude spectrograph on the 2.2-m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory during December 1982, are reported. The data are presented in contour diagrams, tables, and graphs and characterized. Steep gradients are seen in the electron density, line intensity, and velocity dispersion for both objects, sometimes compatible with the assumption of discontinuities broadened by seeing effects. The data for HH1 are found to be consistent with the motion of a single bow shock away from the C-S star and perpendicular to the line of sight, as in the interstellar-bullet model (Norman and Silk, 1979), but some more complex explanation is required for HH2. The emission of the HH1 and HH2 environments is found to include the permitted lines H-beta and H-alpha and the forbidden lines of N II (654.8 and 658.3 nm), S II (671.6 and 673.1 nm), and O III (500.7 nm). 29 references
