Refractory brick density by gamma ray transmission

Description

Transmission of 241Am gamma radiation was used to measure the density of refractory bricks. The transmission was proportional to the density provided the radiation path lengths were constant; special holders were used to compensate for small differences in the sizes of the bricks. A 5% density change gave a 15% change in transmission. The method could be used to test several thousand bricks per day. (auth.)
