Strontium-90, caesium-137 and tritium in water

  • 1. Institute of Radiation Protection, Helsinki (Finland)

Description

The results of strontium-90 and caesium-137 analyses of total deposition (1971-74) and surface water (1970-(73)-74) are given as a follow-up to the previous results. The downward trend in the annual deposition of strontium-90 and caesium-137 since 1970 turned into an upward trend again in 1974. The downward trend of the strontium-90 and caesium-137 concentrations in surface water continued until 1971. In 1972 there was a slight increase in the concentrations. Analyses of sea water samples were continued after a break during the years 1968-73. Rain, river and lake water have been analyzed for tritium since 1968. The seasonal variation in tritium results can clearly be seen; during the last few years, however, concentrations during the winter months have been at the limits of detection. (author)
