Hybrid bubble chambers
Description
The relative advantages of the slow though comprehensive bubble chamber and the much faster electronic detectors, for high-energy collision physics experiments, are considered. Methods whereby bubble-chambers could be more effective in acquiring high-energy data are discussed and the new hybrid system consisting of a chamber equipped with electronic detectors, mainly in the path of the outgoing particles, which have the dual purpose of providing a trigger, or signal to the cameras to take a picture, and of improving the resolution of the apparatus are discussed. Such systems in operation at SLAC, CERN and FNAL are described. It is felt that since almost the only way of studying the interactions between quarks is to bombard one hadron with another. The bubble-chamber still has a future as a high-energy experimenters tool. (U.K.)
