The biological effects of radiation: New results and developments

Description
At present, the percentage of deaths from cancer in the FRG is at 25% including all causes. The proportion of radiation-induced cancer may be assumed to be small. However, a substantial increase of about 1.25% of the population could be calculated if annual median radiation dose were to rise from 0.2 to 1.2 rad. Thus, low-level radiation doses do produce strong effects. The development of genetic engineering in all fields of biology provides some new tools for research into the effects of radiation. This article delineates three areas and discusses some data: State of the art of isolating animal and human DNA-repair genes; transient effects in the low-level dose range; experimental pathways for understanding the mechanism of cancer-type transformation better. Abstract (German)
Der Anteil an Krebstoten in der BRD liegt jetzt bei 25%, alle Ursachen zusammengenommen. Der strahlungsverursachte Teil davon ist wohl sehr klein. Jedoch laesst sich ein respektabler Zuwachs um etwa 1,25% der Bevoelkerung errechnen, wenn die mittlere jaehrliche Strahlendosis von geschaetzten 0,2 auf 1,2 rad ansteigen wuerde. Niedere Strahlendosen haben also starke Wirkung. Mit der Entwicklung der Gentechnologie in allen Bereichen der Biologie habe sich auch neue Moeglichkeiten fuer die Erforschung der Strahlenwirkung ergeben. In dieser Uebersicht werden wir drei Gebiete bezeichnen und einige Daten diskutieren: Stand der Isolierung tierischer und menschlicher DNA-Reparaturgene; transiente Wirkungen im niedrigen Dosisbereich; experimentelle Wege, den Mechanismus der krebsartigen Transformationen verstehen zu lernen.
