Magnetic texture of amorphous Fe78B13Si9 alloy detected by Moessbauer spectroscopy

Amorphous ferromagnetic alloys have attracted considerable interest in recent years and Mossbauer spectroscopy has been proven to be a powerful tool for investigating them. In general, the spectra of the amorphous ferromagnetic alloys obtained with simple-line sources are surprisingly similar: that is, they are rather symmetric six- line hyperfine patterns with broad lines. In spite of the absence of any structural long range order, amorphous ferromagnets can exhibit macroscopic magnetic anistropy or inhomogeneous properties. The experimental evidence for magnetic anisotropy usually has been obtained from magnetic torque and ferromagnetic resonance measurements on disc samples cut out from the ribbons. As is the case with amorphous metal, however, the relative line intensities of the Mossbauer spectrum indicate that the spins are preferentially oriented in the ribbon (magnetic texture) due to internal stresses following inhomogeneous solidification, associated with a large magnetostriction and magnetic anisotropy. Samples in the shape of amorphous ribbons, provided by the melt-spinning technique, have been extensively studied. In this paper, the magnetic textures for the amorphous Fe78B13Si9 alloy prepared by two cooling conditions were investigated by means of Mossbauer spectroscopy
