Description
Many problems are encountered in the attempt to measure mechanical strains in rapidly changing high-temperature environments. A method is presented which provides short term environmental control over the immediate area within which the strain sensors must operate. Well proven strain-gage extensometers were modified by the addition of an insulated water container that limits the temperature of the strain-gaged beam to that of boiling water for approximately fifteen minutes. Low temperature conventional strain gages can be used, and the apparent strain is extremely small
