Ion source for study of charge exchange processes on metal atoms

  • 1. Leningradskij Politekhnicheskij Inst. (USSR)

Description

A design is described of an ion source with a metal evaporator intended for operation in a magnetic mass spectrometer and permitting the meosurement of cross-sections of ion charge exchange on atoms of metals. A multichannel high-temperature leak installed at the output of the metal evaporator provides a uniform density of target atom vapors. The leak is a 1x6 mm tungsten plate with holes in the form of parallel channels. Power consumed by the heater at a crucible temperature of 1000 deg C constitutes 45 W. The ion source with the metal evaporator has been tested when studying organic ions charge exchange on Mg atoms. It has been found that at a crucible temperature of 550 deg C the density of magnesium vapors in the charge-exchange chamber constitutes 3x1010 cm-3, and at the crucible temperature of 950 deg C-1012 cm-3
