The linear σ model, QCD, and the low-energy Lagrangian for pseudoscalar mesons

Description
It is shown that the U(3)xU(3) linear σ model can be brought into agreement with the experimental data on low-energy interactions of pseudoscalar mesons already at the tree level if one supplements it by a Skyrme term describing the interaction with vector mesons. It is also shown that, in addition to providing a solution of the U(1) problem, the model correctly reproduces the properties of the QCD θ vacuum and is in full agreement with the 1/N expansion
