Description

The seven deep boreholes which Nagra has drilled in Northern Switzerland have provided around 9000 metres of cored sample material for scientific analysis. The existence of a wide Permocarboniferous trough filled with sediments from the Stephanian (Upper Carboniferous) and the Rotliegendes (Lower Permian) was confirmed. Detailed facies analyses of the sediments encountered in the deep borehole in the community of Weiach in Canton Zuerich have indicated the existence of a lacustrine series between 1252.07 and 1387.95 metres; this series was deposited by relatively short-lived shallow lakes during thhe Autunian (Lower Rotliegendes). These sediments contain sporadic organic remains of both flora and fauna which provide paleontologists with important information on life in these Early Permian waters. Of particular interest is the identification of three genera of so-called ganoid fish. (author) 19 figs., 5 tabs., 11 refs
