Review Of Diagnosis And Management Of Idiopathic Pain Syndromes In Children

Chronic idiopathic musculoskeletal pain syndromes (CPS) are characterised by persistent, long-term musculoskeletal pain without an identifiable morphological cause. They are not uncommon during childhood. Most frequently they affect older school children and adolescents and may cause significant physical as well as psychosocial disability. Diagnosis of CPS depends upon expertise of a specialist team experienced in the management of chronic musculoskeletal disorders in children. Within the wide spectrum of CPS two defined entities are recognised. Localised CPS is represented by complex regional pain syndrome type 1, fibromyalgia is an example of diffuse CPS. Management of CPS is complex. It is based on multidisciplinary approach combining individual physiotherapy with supportive psychological care and cognitive-behavioral approach. If adequate treatment is initiated early prognosis appears to be favourable. (author)
