Description
Investigations of the compression creep behaviour of uranium dioxide have shown that fine grained UO2 can deform superplastically. Whereas the Ashby-Verral creep model can satisfactorily describe the grain translations, pore shape and creep rates observed experimentally, it has been shown that it is necessary to produce a microstructure consisting of fine grains with small pores at triple-point grain boundary junctions in order to obtain extensive ductility. The relationship between these pores and the overall deformation process is discussed in this paper. (author)
