Coarse-mesh for two-dimensional, mixed-lattice diffusion theory calculations

Description

A coarse-mesh (CM) finite-difference method has been developed for two-dimensional diffusion calculations in hexagonal geometry. Results obtained with the CM method have been compared with conventional finite-difference (CFD) results and with experimental results. The results of this work support the following conclusions: (1) The accuracy of the CM method with 1 point/hex is about the same as the CFD method with 3 or 6 points/hex, depending on the problem being solved. (2) The computing costs, core storage, and CPU time of the CM method with 1 point/hex are about the same as the CFD method with 1 point/hex. (U.S.)
