Description

The energy loss of a particle beam in a dense nonideal plasma is considered as starting from quantum kinetic equations. Stopping power expressions are derived in dynamically screened Born and in binary collision (T-matrix) approximation. Numerical results are presented, and a combined scheme is discussed to include both dynamic screening and multiple-scattering effects. Furthermore, we analyzed the charge number dependence of the stopping power for ion beams in the case of strong beam plasma coupling. Finally, the energy loss of a particle beam in a partially ionized plasma is investigated. A generalized version of the Bethe result for atomic ionization is derived and results for the total stopping power of an electron beam in partially ionized hydrogen are discussed. (orig.)
