Description
The edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4631 has been mapped at 327 MHz with a resolution of 60 x 60 arcsec2 using the Ooty Synthesis Radio Telescope. Faint emission extending up to 7.5 kpc above the plane of the galaxy has been detected, and the spectral index distribution in the disc and halo has been derived by comparing the 327-MHz map with high-frequency maps at 610, 1412 and 10700 MHz. The variation of the low-frequency spectral index (327-610 MHz) is consistent with that for a dynamical radio halo, indicating the presence of a galactic wind in NGC 4631. (author)
