Streamer chamber at low temperature
Description
The results are presented of a streamer chamber operations filled with gas cooled down to 80 deg K at atmospheric pressure. The chamber was filled with neon-helium mixture (70% Ne+30% He), helium, or hydrogen. The high-voltage supply system generates a 20-150 kV/cm electric field intensity in the chamber at a 3 ns pulse duration. It has been established that, as the temperature decreases, the spatial resolution is improved, the streamer size decreases, and the number of streamers in particle track increases. In this case, the voltage supplied to the chamber is practically the same up to 80 deg K. The cryogenic spark chamber becomes a new track instrument (controlled target) for observing the particle-matter interactions because of the improvement of the particle tracks in the streamer chamber as the temperature of the filling gas decreases, and the possibility (resulting from the increased density) of effectively using the chamber filler as target (especially in case of hydrogen filling)
