A measurement of the Z0 invisible width by single photon counting
Description
The invisible width of the Z0 has been measured using the OPAL detector at the CERN LEP e+e- collider by counting the number of single photons generated in the process e+e- → νν-barγ using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.3pb-1. 73 events with single photons depositing more than 1.5 GeV in the electromagnetic calorimeter were observed with an estimated background of 8±2 events. Using these data the Z0 invisible width was determined to be 0.50±0.07±0.03 GeV corresponding to 3.0±0.4±0.2 light neutrino species in the Standard Model where the first errors are statistical and the second ones are systematic.
