Surface composition, solubility, and the ion activity product of calcite in solutions with auxiliary ions

Description

Using the method of simultaneous ion and isotope exchange, the chemical composition of the surface of a calcite powder in equilibrium with solutions of various Me/Ca ratios (Me = Mg 2+, Co 2+, Ni 2+, Fe 2+) is determined. All exchange isotherms show a significant change in surface reactivity when a composition on the surface of (Me/Ca) Obfl. ∼1 and ∼3 is reached. The solubility of calcite initially decreases with the addition of Co 2+ or Ni 2+, while it increases across the entire range of investigation with Mg 2+ or Fe 2+. The ion activity product for the 'pseudocompound' at the surface decreases in the Ni 2+, Co 2+, and Fe 2+ exchange experiments, but increases in the presence of Mg 2+ ions.

Abstract (German)

Me/Ca‐ Verhältnisse bestimmt (Me = Mg 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Fe 2+ ).
