Role of Top Management and Safety Committee for the Enhancement of Safety Culture in Nuclear Malaysia

Leadership and management for safety play a key role in ensuring sustainability and success to any organization. Any incident that occurred will diminish or destroy public confidence and if that happens, to gain their confidence back is a mammoth task. Malaysia has no nuclear power plant but its has nuclear research reactor operated since 1982. The establishment of safety committee chaired by the senior management ensured that the safety culture programme are in place and adhere to. This paper will show various activities conducted by Nuclear Malaysia in strengthening safety culture programme with the existence of safety committee spearheaded by the senior management. The visibility and present of senior management is essential and influential in motivating all Nuclear Malaysia staff that safety and security is everyone business. Cooperation and commitment from all the staff from different level are essential in establishing and ensuring sustainability in the programme. It is important for Nuclear Malaysia to identify senior management with effective leadership capabilities to steer the organization with an attitude in emphasizing safety culture. (author)
