Energy loss and angular spread of ions traversing matter
Description
Some fairly general considerations on the statistical nature of the energy loss of charged particles in matter are discussed. For a survey of stopping power the reader is directed to four sets of previously published lecture notes. The third section of the report deals with multiple scattering. A derivation of the basic multiple-scattering formula (Bothe's formula) is given which makes use of the impact-parameter concept. The Thomas-Fermi interaction and the perturbation approach are discussed. Experiments on noble gas, molecular gas, and solid targets are considered. (B.R.H.)
