Investigation of corrosion behaviors of steels under wet supercritical CO2 environments

The corrosion behaviors of X65, X70 pipelines and P110SS oil casing steel were studied under wet SC-C02 environments with 3.5 wt% NaCl solution simulated in a high temperature and high pressure autoclave. The morphologies of corrosion product scales were observed by SEM, the compositions and constructions were analyzed by EDS and XRD. The results indicated that, after immersion experiment, a dense corrosion product scale was covered on the three steels surface, respectively. These corrosion product scales all consisted of FeCO3. The general corrosion rate results showed that X70 steel had the best general corrosion resistance, while P110SS had the worst. The morphologies after removing the corrosion product scales on the steels surface were observed, which indicated that P110SS steel had the most serious pitting corrosion, while X70 steel had the best resistance of pitting corrosion. The higher corrosion rate of P110SS steel was attributed to the Cr in the matrix. (authors)
