Texture development during pressing and sintering of YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-x/
- 1. Case Western Reserve Univ., Cleveland, OH (USA)
Description
The effects of uniaxial pressing and sintering conditions on intergranular orientation in bulk YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-x/ have been studied by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. In unfired pellets, there is a surface layer --20μm deep with a high degree of orientation of the structure's Cu-O planes perpendicular to the pressing direction. Firing in air or oxygen extends the alignment farther into the sample, although the highest degree of alignment is still found on the pressed surface. Microstructural defects arising from this anisotropic behavior, as well as from chemical inhomogeneities, are reported and discussed
